ACUTE BACK PAIN Acute pain is caused by a new injury. It has just happened and has started hurting. Acute pain can be from day one to a couple of months in duration. Examples might be that you were taking the baby out of the car seat and felt a pop or strain in your back. You may have fallen down the stairs, slipped on the ice or have had an automobile accident. Perhaps your acute pain will get better, but you should consult a chiropractor to determine how much of an injury you sustained. If you need treatment for your injury, and get it, you can prevent future occurrences. Reoccurrences may be caused by weakness in the tissues because the injury didn't heal well. Back pain problems rank high among the reasons for physician office visits and are costly in terms of treatment, time lost from work, and non-monetary costs such as decreased ability to perform or enjoy normal activities. For persons under 45, low back problems are the most frequent cause of disability. Most people report low back problems at some point in their lives. A national statistic indicated a yearly prevalence of 15-20% in the United States population. Signs of Acute Injury: • Stress • Sharp pain • Soreness • Strain • Spasms • Decreased range of motion Acute to Chronic Acute injuries can turn to chronic injuries if the initial injury causes enough damage that it can never be treated to 100% recovery. Another way acute can turn to chronic is if you allow an injury to remain untreated for a long period of time. The slow decline in the strength and motion of that injured area makes a more permanent condition. Another way an injury can become chronic is through a mental state called Fear Avoidance. You don't want to re-injure yourself or make the condition worse so you stop using it or modify how you use it. This modification becomes a habit and even when you are not in pain you continue to not use the injured area. This allows the tissues to become weak. With weakness comes a much higher chance of a re-injury to the same area. |
