WHY REHABILITATION When a person gets an injury there is damage caused to part of their body. The damage could be located in muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, or nerve tissues. Because of this injury a person will change the way they use their body so they can continue to function. Maybe they hurt their low back bending over and picking something up. With their new back pain they cannot bend forward so they bend at the knee joints and lean to the side to get something off the floor. Another example may be that after a neck injury instead of turning their head to look, they turn their whole body. Imagine trying to back out of the driveway. The point is you are now changing which muscles you use to do things. The muscles that are supposed to be used, get weak and the new ones you replaced them with are getting stronger. This becomes a habit. When the pain goes away or decreases you continue to move the same way as when you were injured. Two problems result from this one, because the muscles are not supporting your back or neck correctly it is easier to injure them. Second, by using the substituted muscles, the joints are getting uneven wear and tear so you get irritations on and off. Because of this, muscles get even weaker. Rehabilitation is therefore the answer to your problem. The purpose of the treatment is to first, reestablish the normal movement patterns in your joints. Then, the muscles that support and move your body are strengthened and made to work correctly again. In this way, your body is back to as close to 100% as you can get after an injury. There is no substitute for correcting the problem. You can take medications, you can keep going for treatment every time it acts up, or you can fix it. In some cases there is no way to "fix it". There can be scar tissue in the muscles, tendons, and joints, or the disks can be degenerated, but even in these cases a strong support around the joints in your back or neck will decrease your pain and allow you to have more activities and less discomfort during your day! |
